Born the son of the Mauryan emperor Bindusara, the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya himself, Ashoka was always bound for greatness. He was known for his cruelty and called Chandaashoka for it. His ascension to the throne was marked by conquest after conquest, eventually coming to Kalinga on the east coast of India. It was there that he came across the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, and saw the error of his ways.
